そこに、10人程のグループの日本人ツアー客がやってきた。それで彼が、2グループに分かれて、時間をずらしてウォーキング・サファリに行くようにアレンジしたところ、日本人客たちが何か相談している。で、日本人らがガイドの彼に告げたことが、彼にはすごく意外だったんですと。

「2グループに分かれて行って、片方のグループだけライオンが見れて、もう片方のグループがライオンが見れなかったらイヤなので、そのウォーキング・サファリに参加するのは止めます。」

いいとか悪いとかいう話ではなくて、同じ日本人としてこの感覚は分かるんだよねぇ。「結果の平等が保証されないという理由だけで折角の機会も無にする悪平等」とか、「相互監視と嫉妬の文化」とか、教訓めいた話をする気はさらさらないですけど、こういう結論を出してしまう日本人ならではの空気感は身に覚えがあります。

ガイドの彼とは、「いやあ、それが日本人のfairnessの感覚なんだよね。」と笑って話したんですけどね。
